Exit Counseling

Before you graduate you are required to complete exit counseling. Exit counseling is required for two reasons: 1) It fulfills the federal requirement you agreed to when signing your promissory notes; and (2) It provides you with valuable information regarding the repayment of your loans. Failure to complete exit counseling will result in a hold being placed on your transcript and diploma.

The University of Missouri-Columbia collects for the following types of loans:
  • Perkins/National Direct Student Loans
  • Health Professions Loans
  • Nursing Loans
  • University Loans
William D. Ford Federal Direct Loans are collected by the Department of Education's Direct Loan Servicing Center. FFEL Stafford Loans are collected by the lender that you borrowed from (bank, credit union, or other institution). However, if you received Stafford Loans or Ford Federal Direct Loans while attending MU, you must complete exit counseling for those loans.

What do I need to do?

To find out what you need to do to fulfill your exit counseling requirement, click the appropriate link below for the type of loan you borrowed:

I borrowed ONLY Ford Federal Direct and/or Stafford Loans.

I borrowed one or more of the loans that MU collects. (Perkins, NDSL, Health Professions, Nursing, University).

I borrowed both Ford Federal Direct/Stafford Loans AND one or more loans collected by MU.

If you are not sure what loans you borrowed, please contact the MU Financial Aid Office at 573-882-7506.

But I am not graduating!

If you received an exit counseling notice and you are not graduating from MU this semester you must contact each of your loan holders and inform them of your new graduation date. If you owe one of the loans listed above that are collected by the Student Loan Collections Office at UMU, then please call our office at 573-882-6654 and let us know your new graduation date. If you have borrowed a William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan then you must contact the Direct Loan Servicing Center at 1-800-848-0979. If you borrowed a Stafford Loan, then you must contact the lender of that loan and inform them of your new graduation date.
